Great Lakes
Great Lakes
Great Lakes began in Athens, Georgia in 1996, released an eponymous debut in 2000, and relocated to Brooklyn in 2002. The Distance Between appeared that year, and with 2006 came the release of Diamond Times. A new record, Ways of Escape, will come out in October of 2010.

Over the years Great Lakes' sound has gradually moved away from the psychedelia of their debut, and toward more folk and country influences. With Ben Crum on guitar and vocals, the new record features Kevin Shea (drums), David Lerner (bass), Jay Israelson (piano), Phillip Sterk (pedal steel), Joe McGinty (electric piano and organ), Jon Natchez (bass clarinet and baritone sax), Heather McIntosh (cello), and Suzanne Nienaber (backing vocals).
Radical Dads
Radical Dads
Brooklyn never seems to let up with interesting new music and Radical Dads are no exception. Their howling guitars and anthem-like vocals should really put them on the music radar when they play the upcoming CMJ Festival in New York.

Palomar
Palomar
Palomar formed a few years ago in Brooklyn, New York. They got their name from an observatory in California, which Rachel read about in an interesting book titled Black Holes and Time Warps.

Palomar has released three albums; they put the first album out themselves and it’s called Palomar, with an implied Roman numeral one (released in 1999). Palomar II was recorded a couple of years later, and released on The Self-Starter Foundation by the tall and kindly Chris Newmyer. Palomar began touring after II came out, and have since toured and played with Luna, Mates of State, Spoon, Ted Leo, The Wrens, Starlight Mints, and many, many more.

During the summer of 2003, Palomar, along with their best friends The Oranges Band, were playing a show with their other best friends Dressy Bessy at the Knitting Factory in New York. That night, Jerod and Joanne of Kindercore Records approached them and drunkenly promised to make them big rock stars. It was soon decided that the smart, hardworking, and friendly staff of Kindercore Records would put out their new record. In September and October of 2003, with the help of talented producer Britt Myers (Dressy Bessy, Robbers on High Street, The Essex Green), Palomar recorded Palomar III. However, in November of 2003, Kindercore Records closed their doors permanently due to sudden financial inadequacy. Palomar decided to go ahead and put out Palomar III regardless, and it came out on August 24th, 2004. It received great press in SPIN, Teen People, GQ, Venus, Vitals, Nylon, Blender, Newsday, etc.

In the winter of 2004-2005, Palomar recorded their new EP, titled “Palomar 3.5.” They recorded this EP with their friend Jeddediah Smith in his practice space, a windowless 12 x 12 room underneath the BQE in lower Brooklyn. He offered to record it for free as long as they didn’t mind his constant smoking and vodka drinking. They did, but kept it to themselves.

Palomar’s new EP, “3.5”, features 6 songs plus a bonus of the music video for the song “Albacore” which is the second track on Palomar III.

about the music
This indie quartet's thoughtfully crafted pop songs exist, seemingly unconsciously, in stark and refreshing contrast to the exhausting march of faddish rockers that trudge anonymously along the commercial airwaves today. Palomar is a band that exists simply to express itself uniquely, timelessly, and with endearing optimism.

"PALOMAR III: Revenge of Palomar" reveals a Palomar that has maintained all of its former intelligence, humor, and enthusiasm, but which has gained a reflective worldliness that gives this album satisfying weight.

Look for news about the new Palomar EP, available only on emusic and available for purchase on this web site after April 12th.
Diehard
Diehard
Diehard is four people shrinking their influences into immediate indie pop, like a cannonball dressed up in an autumn sweater. This New York band "has the inherent ability to know their influences and use them to create a sound that has passion and originality dripping from it’s fingers. …Referencing virtually every great late 90’s indie rock band, they still manage to put a spin on it that makes it fresh and exciting.” [The Dumbing of America]
